NEW YORK

Hana Sushi - 211 7th Ave. (Bet. 22 & 23) in Chelsea. Generous slices, great asst. tempura.

Dominic's- 2335 Arthur Ave. 187th & Arthur Ave., in the Bronx-cash only - Family style tables. Just tell them what you like. Try the Zuppa de pesce (Also stop by Madonna BrosBakery -across St-closes 6pm)

Soup Kitchen Int'l 259 W. 55th. at 55th & 8th(Soup Nazi from Seinfeld) (bus stops there on 55th.) - only takout. Closes early, I think.

East Japanese Restaurant (next door to Soup Kitchen International) Large pieces, tons of choices, low prices. Ended up eating there when soup nazi was closed and was pleasantly surprised.

Murry's Bagels - 242 8th Ave., (8th & 22nd in Chelsea.) Best bagels and lox! Several varieties of smoked fish...but they won't toast the bagels.

Whole Foods - corner of 7th & 25th in Chelsea

Le Zie - 172 7th (between 20 & 21 in Chelsea) no lunch 212-206-8686. Great Italian food. Was recommended to me by the folks at Slow Food's National office in NY.

Chinatown:

Bakery-Dai Dung: on Canal (between Center & Lafayette?)-black bean moon cakes

Sun Hop Shing Tea House-Dim Sum-21 Mott

Lots of other Korean barbeque restaurants, many 24 hours, on the same block. I think I've eaten at these: Kum Gang San (some say best), KangSuh, and New York Kom Tang Kalbi House, the oldest Korean (and Japanese) restaurant on the block.

OTHER USA

Guadalupe Inn in Santa Fe - 604 Agua Fria St. Amazing breakfasts. www.guadalupeinn.com This is a B&B I stayed in once. At the time, they said you could just come for breakfast if you weren't staying there, but the website doesn't mention that so call to find out (505) 989-7422

Purple Pig in Chicago - 500 N Michigan Ave, (312) 464-1744. As of June 2011, it's my favorite restaurant in the US. Casual, fun, amazing small plates, fresh, creative, flavorful. Love it! Went twice in one weekend.

The Salt Lick in Austin (actually in Driftwood, ouside of Austin) www.saltlickbbq.com - my favorite barbeque anywhere. Thanks to Kathe and Peter for turning me onto it. Fun place too! Get the all you can eat meat meals.

INTERNATIONAL

Au Pied du Cochon in Montreal, Canada - 536 Rue Duluth Est(www.restaurantaupieddecochon.ca/homef.htm - in French) 514-291=1114. I love this brasserie and went twice in one week! Lots of meat and foie gras. The name means the "foot of the pig" and they specialize in pork. Try the fruits de mer shellfish platters - a tower with a massive platter of unique shellfish and dipping sauces below. Not cheap, but worth it! Try the Poutine de Foie Gras - a gourmet take on the traditional french fry dish...decadent.

Cibreo in Florence Italy - Via Andrea del Verrocchio 8r - 055 234 11 00 - This has got to be one of my favorite restaurants in the world. Thanks to Chef Bradford Heap for turning me onto it, and to Peggy for taking us there during cooking school in Tuscany. I have found very poor reviews online - saying they are overrated and just famous for being famous, but it remained one of the best dining experiences I've ever had...and all by myself mind you - as well as later with the class.

Trattoria dei Quattro Leoni in Florence, Italy - Via dei Vellutini, 1r - www.4leoni.com - Lovely to eat outside on the piazza. At least this one gets high ratings online too. It was also recommended by Peggy and it was wonderful. It's near, yet far removed from the tourists at the Ponte Vecchio. I had the Taglierini al tartufo bianco and Pomodorini e mozzarella di bufala and loved them both - perfectly prepared!
