SPRING/SUMMER

Chautauqua Concert Series (pay for tickets inside or picnic free outside) - Get summer schedule. At the base of Baseline Dr., Boulder.

Conference on World Affairs – First week of April at CU. Annual event of hundreds of week-long discussion and debate attracts world-renowned experts from all disciplines.

Dinosaur Ridge - see dinosaur footprints (on Highway 26 in Morrison). C470 to Morrison exit, Go West. 200 Ft take a right is S. Rooney Rd (before Conoco). At stop, take left on W. Alameda. 1/4 mile on right is center. Free trail map. Admission free.

Eldorado Canyon. Watch the climbers on the steep rock walls and have picnic near the river. (can also swim in the pool, fed by a natural spring – not hot, but heated like normal pool). Just south of Boulder, off Rt. 93/Broadway.

Elitches-Six Flags Amusement Park in Denver – Rollercoasters, water park, etc.

Hudson Gardens - at Santa Fe, south of Bowles in Denver (1 mi. S. of Bellevue). 9-5, ($4 summer, free Nov. to April) 797-8565. They have concerts at night.

Kinetic Conveyance Race & Balloon Race - 1st weekend in May – CANCELLED, FOR NOW

Meteor Showers. Go out to the plains to watch the Perseids meteor shower in August around the 12th; or the Leonids - around November 17. or –Quadrantids – around Jan 4; Geminids – around Dec. 14. Orionids – around October 21. I go out Rt. 52 (Diagonal and IBM) and park in an oil derrick turn-off. (I figure they are probably easements onto private farms, so are probably OK)

Picnic – Eldorado (park at the end of the road in), Flagstaff mountain, Gross Reservoir, Eben G Fine Park.

Platte Valley Trolley – (www.denvertrolley.org): April 21 to Memorial Day and Labor Day through Halloween - Friday-Saturday-Sunday; Memorial Day through Labor Day; Wednesday-Thursday-Friday-Saturday-Sunday 11:30 AM — Route 84 Excursion (55 minutes in duration) One run only per day, 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM — Riverfront Ride, (25 minutes in duration) Departs continuously every 1/2 hour from REI (Last run made at 3:30 PM)

Rafting down the Colorado River, Roaring Fork or Arkansas (camping or day trip). Whitewater Rafting Co. in Glenwood is great outfitter. Or come around July 4th and raft with Ray.

Rockies Games

The Wild Animal Sanctuary, Keenesburg (1 hr E on Rt 52): 600+ Abandoned/mistreated Lions, tigers and bears and more saved from homes and zoos and live in natural outside habitats.

Ruby Hill Park ski and rider urban rail yard opened in 2007 at South Platte River Drive and West Florida Avenue. Open every day from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Jan. 19 through the end of Feb. 2007. Free and open to the general public.

Art Galleries – First Friday’s galleries open in evenings and some have munchies and wine. On Santa Fe (from 5th 0 10th Aves) on warm nights, it’s like Bourbon Street with thousands of people walking from gallery to gallery with wine glasses…street performers, blocked off streets, etc. Get there early to find a parking spot.

Blue Moon: A tradition I started when, on a blue moon (second full moon in month), you do things you’ve never done before or you only do once in a blue moon. Upcoming blue moons: Dec. 31, 2009; Aug, 31, 2012; July 31, 2015

International Markets – roam Vietnamese and Japanese markets, eat dim sum, shop Mexican flea markets. Russian and Mid-East markets. Best area is around Federal and Alameda in Denver.

Platte Valley Airpark has an air museum with vintage planes, the largest collection of “named” uniforms (whatever that means) and they fly the planes on Saturday mornings. In Ft. Lupton. Take 52. Go north on 41 (it’s east of hwy 76 by about 1-1/2 miles) to 18, then left and follow signs-not sure directions are correct. 303-668-8044

National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder- Tours on atmospheric science in both English and Spanish are available for adults and children. Exhibit with a comprehensive view of Earth’s past and present climate, along with a new installation that explores the future climate, a telescopic camera, working supercomputers, a gravity well, and demonstrations of lightning, a tornado, and fluid dynamics. Vampire Grave: "Mr. Glava" from 1800's - Lafayette Municipal Cemetery located next to the Bob L. Burger Recreation Center, 111 West Baseline Road. In a well-groomed cemetery, two huge unkempt rose bushes shroud this grave, and there is a very large tree growing right where the body is. Legend says the rose bushes are the vampire's finger nails which never stop growing and the tree sprouted from the wooden stake used to slay the vampire.

Arapahoe Glacier (I can’t find Alice Ghost Town?!)

Aspen: Jazz Aspen Snowmass (free concert?). Go up to Maroon Bells (most photographed mountain in CO or maybe US?). Shop at the best second hand stores! (all the rich people bring their clothes there). Go to the Grottos (a waterfall just outside of town). Great restaurants. Gondola ride. Hot Air ballooning (expensive but great experience!)

Breckenridge – fun ski town with lots of shopping and walking.

Buffalo Herd Overlook on I70 (stop by on way to Little Bear)

Camp - Green Mt Reservoir, Rocky Mt. (3 mi from Grand Lake entrance on river, per Mark & Carol), off 285 (forest service access) & Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Road (Ghost town) BLM land off Rt 185

Castle by Westcliff-10 miles north of Lake Isabel?

Cheyenne. A couple hours? Dance with cowboys at the Cheynne Club?

Colorado Springs/ Manitou: Garden of the Gods (beautiful red rock formations park). Take the (very slow!) cog railroad to the top of Pikes Peak. Go to Manitou Springs (very cute town to roam around). Air Force Academy (not much to see except nice grounds and interesting church). Tourist attractions (some are somewhat hokey): Cave of the Winds (could be slippery?). Seven Falls. Royal Gorge Bridge (1 hour drive) – I haven’t been, but here it’s breathtaking…you better not have a fear of heights. Buffalo Bill Wax Museum. Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy. Manitou Cliff Dwellings Museum (fake cliff dwellings-not worth it). Ghost Town Museum (hokey). North Pole-Santa’s Workshop (bet you wanna go there). There are more, too hokey to mention. Cripple Creek gambling. Cheyene Mt. Zoo

Grand Junction & Palisade – Tour the vineyards. Go for WineFest in September or the Peach Festival – Aug? (should be at least 3-day weekend…long drive). Colorado National Monument.

Georgetown (roam town, ride narrow gauge train and go into silver mine during summer ($14.50 in 2002) reservations 303-569-2403, drive up Guanella Pass)-

Grand Lake: Rocky Mountain National Park Lake (can rent boats – paddle boats, put-put motor boats, I think, canopy boats) Hot Sulphur Springs (nearby) -indoor & outdoor hot springs spa, massage, wraps etc.

Mesa Verde National Monument – long drive – 7 hours?

HOT SPRINGS & SPAS

Glenwood Springs Worlds largest outdoor mineral pool, turn of the century resort. Vapor caves (like a natural stone steam bath). Beautiful canyon drive. Cute town to walk and shop. Watch white-water rafters on the Colorado River . Interesting nearby sights – Redstone (old coke ovens), Marble (where Colorado marble is quarried). 3+ hrs from Boulder.

Hot Sulphur Springs – near Grand Lake. Several indoor and outdoor pools, including one natural rock one and a private rock one. 2.5 hours away.

Indian Springs Resort in Idaho Springs- hot spring caves, pool, rooms (It’s fun to stay over and party in Idaho Springs) 1 hour from Boulder.

Izba Russian Banya spa – izbaspa.com. 1441 York (at Colfax) $130 (8/08) for 2-1/2 hours of massage, mask and banya: “In a Banya the temperature is increased by pouring scented water on hot rocks on the stove, which will create steam and open the pores. Once you start to perspire, the whisks of oak/birch leaves are taken out of the water, and used to gently stroke, brush and tap the body from neck to toes, followed by a honey rub to draw out toxins to soften and condition the skin.”

Pagosa Springs – far away. 6-7 hours away? But lovely.

Mt. Princeton Hot Springs near Buena Vista. Pool and spring in river. 3-4 hrs.

Ojo Caliente – Santa Fe/Taos (about 7 hours) – different mineral springs, hippieish now it’s chi-chi and very relaxing.

Steamboat Springs/Strawberry Hot Springs – Most beautiful hot spring in state. camping: lots 3,4 (5 & 6) are best and closest to springs. Also visit Fish Creek Falls, Strings in the Mountains Festival of Music at the base of the Mt., Gondola ride, in-town hot springs at Rec center. Walking tour of springs throughout town. 3-4 hours away? Need 4-wheel to get there in winter or heavy rain.

Valley View Hot Springs – Clothing optional. (get there in time to do the 1 1/2-2 hr hike up to watch the 40,000 bats emerge from the glory hole mine at dusk to feed). Or, reserve horseback rid for evening (not doing anymore?). Camp or try to reserve cabin. 4-5 hours away.

Aquaduct in the valley north of Eldorado on west side of 93.

Brainard Lake/Mitchell/Blue. Closest the continental divide meets the front range. Beautiful, Lakes, glacier. Fee. Crowded on weekends. Go through Ward, and cross the Peak to Peak highway to the entrance. Popular snowshoe spot.

Ceran St. Vrain/Miller Rock (Beautiful!, per Janet). 36 North. Take left at Greenbriar restaurant on Lefthand Canyon. Follow signs to Jamestown. Pass through. Turns to dirt? Take a right. Trail is Ceran St. Vrain. Hike a ways then take left to Miller Rock.

Eldora (Hesse mining camp) – old building remains

Eldorado Canyon. Several trails in valley or canyon.

Flatirons Vista (part of Dowdy Draw trail). South on 93. Pass the aquaduct trail toward Eldorado and the old “Stonehenge” hill. On right. Walk toward mountains for a great view of Flatirons and valley. Would be great at sunset.

Gross Reservoir, 40 minutes up Flagstaff Mountain. Roam around lake.

Dream Canyon. The back of Boulder Falls. Beautiful, but very hard to get to bottom of falls/river…still can’t figure it out. Boulder Canyon to Sugarloaf. 3.1 miels. Left on Lost Angel. At intersection at 1 mile, go straignt on North Draw Road. Veer right at 1.1 miles and reach dirt parking area. Look for one of three trails down. Good luck! It’s a popular gay spot. Be prepared for naked people sunning on the rocks.

Mesa Trail – Start at Flagstaff or NCAR.

61st. Trail. Easy, pretty. river, ponds. Great walk for dogs. East on Valmont, North on 61st. Pull off at the parking area by the stream on the left south of the curves in the road where it turns to 63rd.

Settlers Park (red rocks). At mouth of Canyon Blvd.

Sanitas West on Mapleton. Park near hospital at mouth of canyon.. Hike lower (easy) or upper (steep) trails.

Teller Farm – Arapahoe, 1 mile east of 75th. Turn Left to Teller Farm. (North Teller Farm: East on Valmont, 2 miles after 75th. On right). Can see White Rocks from there.

Train at Coal Creek Canyon. South on 93. Right at Coal Creek. I think you take a the next left? Park next to the railroad tracks. Ignore the no trespassing signs and walk south to the sand-filled train cars on the mesa. It was put there to stop other trains from blowing off the mesa. White Rocks, off 75th, inside Heatherwood housing dev. – Can’t hike right to cliffs…off limits, but if you trespass onto White Rocks (city property), walk along stream, onto the private propery, look for suspected mountain lion hole with bones (up on side of cliff) near where the stream meets cliff. Don’t bring old dog or you may be stalked.
